"Green Peter" [MP3]

New Music: Broadcast: "Green Peter" [MP3]

If you listen to Broadcast solely to savor vocalist Trish Keenan's Françoise Hardy-esque sighs, then the UK avant-pop duo's latest offering has nothing for you. If, by chance, you also dig the electronic abstraction the group inherited from producers like Joe Meek, then "Green Peter" will boldly take you where Broadcast's 2000 debut, The Noise Made by People, went before on cinematic tracks like "Minus One" and "Tower of Our Tuning". Most prominent in the new track are the jazzy drums, maintaining an intricate rhythm by way of rapid fills and splashing cymbals. Star Trek synths hover over a couple of notes on one side of the mix, while scratchier electronics wheeze willy-nilly in the other speaker. Broadcast recorded "Green Peter" for a project called Binary Oppositions, which features 10 artists based in the band's Birmingham, England, and is hosted by the Critic Gallery in Brescia, Italy. Those of us still waiting for a tune might be in luck: The band's label, Warp, says they're at work on a new full-length, a follow-up to 2005's Tender Buttons and 2006 non-album rarities compilation The Future Crayon.
