New Music: Ghislain Poirier: "Blazin' (Modeselektor Remix)" [MP3/Stream]
Of all the creepy and inexplicable ways to peddle automobiles, this Modeselektor remix ranks up top with the kid who whispers "zoom, zoom!" The remix of Ghislain Poirier's "Blazing" comes from the Scion (as in the car line) Remix Project in which top DJs mangle lead singles from various dance/dancehall/house labels like Greensleeves, Ninjatunes, Vice Records, and others.
Right off the bat, the remix gives the sense of being in the grips of a terrifying and immense location, teeming with evil motion-- a rain forest, perhaps, or a factory, maybe one encroaching upon the other. Picture the Keebler elves churning a uranium brew, or assembling a three-door coup, conceivably. A vocoder starts the track with a loop so trebley and thin that its passes for a cricket's chirp: "We keep it, we keep it, we keep it." Then, with the flick of a switch, the beat drops, alternating rigid, mechanical blips and bloops with other electro-drum clatter like the pistons of an enormous machine. A scurrying hi-hat suggests nervous energy, while a roaring ogre at the break suggests that Modeselekor's sinister ethos is more mischievous than dreadful, more Loki than Thor.
