"Navy Nurse"

Video: The Fiery Furnaces: "Navy Nurse"

"If there's anything I've had enough of, it's today," the Fiery Furnaces sing on "Navy Nurse", from latest schizophrenic indie-rock outing Widow City. The song's monster 1970s-rock riffage, meanwhile, is saying pretty much the same thing. Directed by Moses Berkson, the video for "Navy Nurse" depicts what seems like the kind of day Eleanor Friedberger would want to hang onto, though everything about it-- the haircut, the clothes, the sunglasses, the pre-digital technology you see people using on screen-- could've been pretty much the same in some halcyon the Guess Who-era past. Friedberger should be enjoying a sunny day on a pebbly beach: taking the occasional dip as the kids play with their kick boards and speed boats occasionally go by. Like Victoria Bergsman on holiday in Taken By Trees' recent "Lost and Found" video, though, she looks a little lonely. Where's Matthew?
