"Shake It to the Ground"

Video: DJ Blaqstarr [ft. Rye Rye]: "Shake It to the Ground"

It's too easy to compare young Baltimore rapper Rye Rye to Brooklyn's Lil Mama; both are young female MCs who can spit hard over minimal backing. In Rye Rye's case, so minimal that there's not much to say about her guest spot on Baltimore producer DJ Blaqstarr's Supastarr EP other than what Pitchfork's Tom Breihan already wrote in his review: "Shake It to the Ground," Breihan says, "would sound like garden-variety kiddie-rap if not for Rye Rye's eerie deadpan delivery and for the disorienting layers of echo that Blaqstarr piles on, both of which turn it into something bizarrely ominous and otherworldly." It's also utterly hypnotic.

So if you're ready to spend all weekend fighting the voice in your head that compels you to "shake it to the ground, then bring it back up," Rye Rye is now also the star of a new video for the track. It's a contagiously fun clip with scenes of Rye Rye rapping and dancing with some friends at home, in the neighborhood, and by a fountain, accompanied by some shots of people shaking it at a party. Blaqstarr's "Shake It to the Ground" remixes are currently available via iTunes, while Rye Rye is-- yup-- on tour with M.I.A. Avril Lavigne videos or no, Lil Mama can't say that.
