New Music: The Black Ghosts: "Repetition (Emperor Machine Remix)" [Stream]
The potential banana jokes never stop. UK electro-pop duo the Black Ghosts' white label-only single "The Repetition Kills You" features two instantly recognizable ape-man vocalists: yes, ex-Simian singer Simon Lord who is one half of the Black Ghosts along with the Wise Guys' Theo Keating, but also a "mystery guest" who, hmm, sounds a heck of a lot like a certain Gorillaz frontman. This remix by Andy Meecham's Emperor Machine project layers the voices with reverb and brings out the song's insistent bass line, adding watery synth ripples for an expansive dance floor track that may not add up to the sum of its personnel, but isn't half-bad.
The tendency is toward cosmic sprawl, with mostly indecipherable vox courtesy of Lord (the lofty tenor you remember from Justice vs. Simian's "We Are Your Friends", Simian Mobile Disco's dreamy "I Believe", or possibly the Black Ghosts' own "Some Way Through This"). Fair warning: There is a murderous amount of repetition. Cigarettes will kill you, too, so go ahead, go at least half-apeshit.
