New Music: Discodeine: "Tema di Gamma" [Stream]

Paris's DIRTY label made a name for itself last year with a series of edits of the likes of Edwin Starr, Amon Düül, and, um, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons-- the latter, "Beggin'", which went on to get snapped up for a legit release on Warner subsidiary 679, going on to blow the minds of handbag housers the world over with its amphetamine-soul stomp. The label's "first 'real' release" (their words) comes from Discodeine, aka Piloski and Pentile. Despite what the name suggests, this is no cough-syrup cosmic disco, though it's plenty psychotropic. Where the A-side of their Texas Gladiators single, "Ring Modulation", splits the difference between Yellow Magic Orchestra, Giorgio Moroder, and Superpitcher, "Tema di Gamma" is the record's WTF moment, with what sounds like a close-miked prepared piano banging out an alternate soundtrack to Bullit's chase scenes.
