Video: Final Fantasy: "The Power of Love" (Céline Dion cover)
Let's talk about "The Power of Love", and not even the Back to the Future-soundtracking Huey Lewis and the News single. No, we're talking about the first U.S. chart-topper by titanium-lunged Québécoise chanteuse Céline Dion, from 1993's The Colour of My Love. Toronto-born violinist, singer, songwriter and string arranger Owen Pallett, aka Final Fantasy, played the song at the recent launch party for Forker (full disclosure) Carl Wilson's book on Dion's Let's Talk About Love for Continuum Books' 33 1/3 series (to which, even fuller disclosure, other Pitchfork writers have also contributed). Pallett gives the song a sincere-sounding, mellifluous violin-and-voice reading, though the crowd's chuckles kill the mood a bit. The reasons people might react this way to Dion's music form the underlying subject of Wilson's excellent book, subtitled "A Journey to the End of Taste". (via Lycanthropy)
