There were a few surprises at last night's Grammy Awards, such as Herbie Hancock winning Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters and discovering during an intro that Fergie and John Legend had eight Grammys between them. There were also some solid performances. Kanye West did "Stronger" with sample inspiration Daft Punk jamming away behind him in their pyramid (somehow, this wasn't quite as amazing as it sounds on paper), then followed with an emotional run through "Hey Mama" (he also had the word "Mama" shaved into the back of his head). Minneapolis funk legends the Time came down from their Ice Cream Castle and reunited to perform "Umbrella" and "Don't Stop the Music" with Rihanna, throwing in a few measures of "Jungle Love" for old time's sake (boy, Jerome has aged well). Amy Winehouse, the national security risk with the voice of an angel, was reasonably coherent on "You Know I'm No Good" and "Rehab", live from London via satellite, on a night when she cleaned up awards-wise. And Feist performed-- what else?-- "1234".
