"Rainbow Flag" [MP3]

New Music: Matmos: "Rainbow Flag" [MP3]

Matador has posted "Rainbow Flag", the first mp3 from Supreme Balloon, the forthcoming album by Matmos. The word on this record is that the concept is a little looser-- no period pieces, no plastic surgery disasters, no roses with teeth in the mouths of beasts. Instead, from the description, Supreme Balloon appears to be a sort of inversion of their 1998 LP Quasi Objects. Where that record was comprised entirely of samples of things Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt had laying around their San Francisco home (they're now based in Baltimore), and hence focused on the acoustic properties of tangible things in physical space, Supreme Balloon is purely electronic, born entirely of synthesizers. ("Supreme Balloon is an ALL synthesizer album and no microphones were used at any point," sez Matador.) "Rainbow Flag" applies these principals to a compact, exotica-inflected instrumental pop tune. (Full disclosure: Drew Daniel writes for Pitchfork.)
