"Don't Go This Way" was left on the cutting room floor during the sessions from Matthew Dear's avant techno-pop album, the Pitchfork-recommended Asa Breed. RCRD LBL has rescued and released this track as a digital single to coincide with his UK tour with Hot Chip; for that our ears should send thank you notes.
As on Asa Breed, Dear wields the human voice as he would an instrument. Here he warps and loops helium drunk vocals around a softly bustling beat and flaring melodic sunspots, while his own phased pipes bellow some tightly rhymed nonsense about the devil and fire. If a psychedelic-tinged beauty like this was cut from the pack, you have to wonder what else he's keeping.
