New Music: Autechre: "Altibzz" [Stream]
The phrase "vapor trails" came up somewhere when we spoke to Rob Brown from Autechre recently about their upcoming album Quaristice. The soft, lyrical piece "Altibzz" that opens the record is a satisfying sound analogue to that wispy visual image. Without a clear sense of direction or firm structure, the track sort of hangs in the air like a wind chime, clanging this way and that. It feels in a way like an inversion of a snippet from Eno's Thursday Afternoon, all that track's empty space filled in with chords, the former's pinging piano notes heard here as the occasional moment of silence. The track is streaming on RCRD LBL, and, as the site also points out, Booth and Brown are going to broadcast a live set from their website at 8 p.m. GMT tomorrow.
