Video: Supergrass: "Bad Blood"

Recent Brit hypes from Arctic Monkeys to Kate Nash have some distance to go before they'll match the respectable return-on-buzz ratio of their predecessors in lavish advance praise, Supergrass. Fevered (and deserved) critical and peer acclaim for the Oxford-based rockers' first single, 1994's independently released "Caught by the Fuzz", helped propel the band's debut full-length I Should Coco to the top of the UK charts a year later. It took until 1999's self-titled third album and a Gumby-like video before Supergrass really gained any commercial traction in the U.S., however, and their latest clip, for single "Bad Blood" from forthcoming sixth album Diamond Hoo Ha, sees the band returning to "Buzz Bin"-ready style both sonically and visually. With soft-loud dynamics and a vocal by frontman Gaz Coombes that recalls the band's In It for the Money-era glory (for a post-Is This It world), "Bad Blood" is a shuffling, mutton-chops-out rocker that addresses loneliness through roaring power chords and a sense of humor. Like some of the Buzz Bin's finest, the video relies on a deceptively simple conceit-- this time it's a room that sways, rather than Gumby-ness or a wind tunnel. Backed by Christmas lights, the band performs as chandeliers, clocks, and eventually everything else swings back and forth. Soon enough it's time to start destroying instruments. Popcorn ensues.
