New Music: These New Puritans: "Navigate, Navigate (The Loving Hand Remix)" [MP3]

How do you make Southend, England quartet These New Puritans' 15-minute catwalk stroll "Navigate, Navigate" even longer? Um, try turning over the 12" (copies of which Domino is giving away, DJs and vinyl fiends, details here). The B-side's mix by the Loving Hand (aka the DFA co-founder Tim Goldsworthy) is actually the rare remix that's shorter than the original, but it'll still help you keep the clockwork-like hypnosis going for another 11 minutes plus. That's not a bad thing, as the These New Puritans version's "gnashing electric guitar, spacey synths, tape loops, stereo-panned clusters of relentless percussion, and cryptic, Fujiya & Miyagi-meet-Futureheads incantations"-- as we described the track last time-- made it intermittently thrilling, even if it was a bit exhausting. Goldsworthy rids the song of its most overt post-punk trappings, turning away from guitars to surround the krautrock-like bass line with even more synths and, near the end, blipping IDM beats rapid enough to sound like a deck of cards being shuffled. The original track may have been commissioned for a fashion show, but it would've fit just as well for a movie scene set in a vast, labyrinthine factory; Goldsworthy's remix belongs on a space station, perhaps in that final, fateful quarter-hour before everything goes to red alert. Nah, Houston, everything is cool.
