Video: Gnarls Barkley: "Who's Gonna Save My Soul"

Big-name musical guests must be the new movie references, or something. Gnarls Barkley first broke into the public consciousness ahead of 2006's St. Elsewhere with the duo of Goodie Mob's soulful Cee-Lo and mash-up man DJ Danger Mouse appearing in publicity stills as characters from films, whether A Clockwork Orange or Napoleon Dynamite. For follow-up The Odd Couple, the aforementioned odd couple have already expanded Justin Timberlake's pop-culture ubiquity with the early-rap throwback video for first single "Run", and now the Roots' ?uestlove has turned up to post the new album's "Who's Gonna Save My Soul" on YouTube. The (possibly unofficial) video, apparently involving barf loads of Patrón, isn't much to watch-- miming, colors changing-- but the song is the retro-soul its title suggests, Cee-Lo declaiming his woes over a marching beat and subdued guitars.

Not wanting to be a dumb ass parrot, I'll just repeat exactly what ?uestlove wrote: "most idiots will probably be on some 'scoff...this aint no CRAZY'--well you dumb ass parrots--this to me digs deeper. and what an apt title The Odd Couple: a very dense dark atmospheric moody templet just dramatic enough for the last great living and WORKING soul singer under 40 and the most creative and intuitive producer maniac music has seen in a sec."

[from The Odd Couple; due 04/08/08 on Downtown/Atlantic]
