New Music: The Letter G [produced by Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip and Kieran Hebden]: "It's Gone (12" JBriffaz Mix)" [Stream]

The Letter G is brought to you today by Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor and Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet), the two of whom produced the electronic musician's debut single, "It's Gone". The man behind the letter of the alphabet is Hagop Tchaparian, who has helped out on drum machines for Hot Chip and will be bringing the Letter G to open for the UK electro-pop outfit on upcoming European tour dates. Although "It's Gone", heard here in a 12" mix by Julien Briffaz, is a spacious dance instrumental, Tchaparian swears fealty to the likes of Minor Threat and Bad Religion as well as club-friendlier forebears from Armand Van Helden to James Holden. Sure, he mentions Sepultura and System of a Down, too, but the Ian MacKaye interview and positive-thinking manifesto on the Letter G's MySpace suggest he takes hardcore pretty seriously. The track itself builds from a basic, squelchy acid house opening through a series of drum-machine fills and rattling melody lines and droning squeaks. These elements fade in and out, but a heavy bass foot thuds underneath almost constantly, the kind of rhythm you don't need letters to express.
