New Music: The Week That Was [Field Music's Peter Brewis]: "The Airport Line" [Stream]
It's a productive time for the brothers Brewis. As Field Music, with keyboardist Andrew Moore, the Sunderland, UK, sibling pair of Peter and David Brewis have released two dazzling albums of clever, catchy, and taut guitar-pop reminiscent of XTC: 2005's self-titled debut (featuring the near-perfect "Shorter Shorter") and 2007's Tones of Town, both on Memphis Industries. Then David struck off on his own in fine form as School of Language on this year's "Rockist"-baiting Sea From Shore. Now it's Peter's turn. He has a self-titled debut due this summer under the name The Week That Was, and an early preview, "The Airport Line", has appeared on his project's MySpace. Its herky-jerk bass guitar, whirring drums, and lush strings shouldn't disappoint fans of other Brewis projects, while shimmering keyboards and references to 1980s pop hits-- a MySpace bulletin counts three of them-- make for something a little different, too. Piles of cocaine and some much-deserved chart success, possibly not in that order, and these two could totally be the next Liam and Noel. Rivalry!
