You have to hand it to the Breeders-- they never took the easy way. Instead of cashing in after their huge success in the 1990s, they mucked around, got weirder, and refused to Give the People What They Want. How much of that was by design is an open question, but the Breeders have certainly traveled their own highly idiosyncratic road. The trend continues with "Bang On", an advance track from Mountain Battles that they've just posted to their website. It's short, almost a trifle, with weirdly bloated drums and bass anchoring an otherwise skeletal arrangement and a melody containing about three notes. There's nothing "big event" about it in the least, which may well be the point.
