New Music: Odd Nosdam [ft. Jessica Bailiff]: "Forever Heavy (Shoegangster/JB Remix)" (Black Moth Super Rainbow cover) [MP3/Stream]

Having nostalgic sweet things, forever-- with weird vocal effects-- has been a concern of psychedelic music since, jeez, maybe that one single by the Beatles b/w "Penny Lane"? The electronic folk-pop mind-mashers of Pittsburgh's Black Moth Super Rainbow like to distance themselves from 1960s psych, and though their "chew bubblegum" sung through sickly filter would seem to fit, their use of vocoder and some of the spaced-out synthesizers you'd get from French electro-loungers Air or old Jean Michel Jarre, not just the psilocybin earthiness of your woodsier psych-folk types, sets them apart. Odd Nosdam builds his remix of "Forever Heavy"-- from the Anticon producer's forthcoming remixes and B-sides double-disc, Pretty Swell Explode-- from the bottom up, enlisting Kranky artist Jessica Bailiff to recreate the wan, girlish sing-song, and Subtle/Themselves drum-machine guy Jel to add a laid-back hip-hop beat. We're not talking "Leave Them All Behind" or The Chronic here, but "Shoegangster" is a fair enough way to describe how Nosdam remakes the glassy-eyed, alien-abducted original as a swirl of fuzz and ice cream and, like, shoes dropping. All of which might help get that bubblegum so it's not in your hair forever.
