Video: Los Campesinos!: "My Year in Lists"
Los Campesinos! waste no time getting to the (exclamation) point in the video for "My Year in Lists", which ends before the two-minute mark. The single from the Pitchfork-recommended Hold on Now, Youngster... comes backed with covers of songs by Deerhoof, Bikini Kill, and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, each clocking in at less than one minute. The video is equally free of filler-- a bit too free, really-- consisting mostly of shots of each of the Campesinos! against a plain backdrop. The song itself is where the septet get carried away, starting with the opening line: "Send me stationery to make me horny." Isn't that just a little ridiculous? Of course! The song describes the point where a long-distance relationship becomes too much, backed by one of the group's now-familiar Arcade Fire-meets-Bis arrangements. Gareth Campesinos! at first tries to keep up with his faraway lover's requests, going as far as "decorating envelopes for foreplay," but finally has to demur when she asks him to list his New Year's resolutions. "I cherish with fondness the day (before) I met you," Los Campesinos! sing, closing the book on another year, and another tedious romance, just in time, with just enough too-muchness to leave me wanting more.
