New Music: Thank You: "Empty Legs" [MP3/Stream]

What every band except the ones that prefer to say "fuck you" will have to tell the crowd eventually, Baltimore art-punk trio Thank You get out of the way in their band name. From Thank You's forthcoming Thrill Jockey debut, Terrible Two, "Empty Legs" isn't exactly polite. Chaotic drumming rumbles and splashes beneath berserk gym-coach whistles, trilling electric guitars, and wordless chanting. The closest parallel that comes to mind would be fellow Baltimore art-rockers Ponytail; Thank You's sound here is every bit as abstract, though their frenzied commotion lacks Ponytail's spaghetti Western zest, working more like a post-punk mash-up of garage psych and prog. The guitars take on more urgency as the track goes on-- the drums seem to, too, even though at the outset it sounds like they couldn't possibly-- culminating in a blistering drone that never quite sounds fulfilled, but does, at least, sound welcome. So like, you're uh, you know, you're welcome, or whatever.
