New Music: Syclops: "I've Got My Eye on You" [Stream]

Never let it be said that Maurice Fulton has no sense of humor. As if the Sheffield, UK-based producer's work with Mu (Afro Finger and Gel? Out of Breach (Manchester's Revenge)?) or aliases such as Eddie & the Eggs hadn't tipped you off already, Fulton's forthcoming full-length debut for DFA, released under the name Syclops, will be called I've Got My Eye On You. And if you believe the promo info, Fulton's role in this project involves production work for the Finnish trio of Sven Kortehisto, Hanna Sarkari, and Jukka Kantone (all of whom conveniently refuse to do press). Where Syclops' first DFA single, "Where's Jason's K", showcases Fulton's pristine drum sounds and beats the 8-bit kids at their own game with a bouncing Super Mario Bros. melody, the title track from the album is even more loosely held together-- and sounds even more likely to fall apart at any given moment. With structure less instantly discernible out of those whirring electronic clicks and intermittently gurgling bass notes, we're left grasping at ethereal synth washes. So our hands are clean. Our brains are soothed. But our teeth are on edge. And somewhere, as this track segues directly into album closer "A Lovely Sunday", Fulton and his (imaginary?!) Finnish friends are probably chuckling.
