Premiere: Ida: "The Pain of Loving You" (Dolly Parton cover) [MP3/Stream]
There's something to be said for reinventing a song and injecting your own personality into it, but there's also something to be said for knowing when to stay the heck out of the way. Ida's cover of this Dolly Parton chestnut-- which she wrote and sang with early mentor Porter Wagoner -- is faithful all down the line, from the voices to the arrangement, and there's not much need for embellishment. The 1971 lament about the hurt that comes from wanting someone you shouldn't, due on Ida's forthcoming My Fair, My Dark EP, still holds up; sometimes love don't feel like it should, another voice from the heartland would remind us a decade later.
