Guest List: Queens of the Stone Age
Welcome to the latest edition of Pitchfork's Guest List. Each week, we
ask one of our favorite artists to fill us in on what they've been up
to lately: which tracks they can't stop spinning, what books they can't
put down, and what new bands they've caught on tour. This week it's Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age, who goes grumpy old man on us, getting nostalgic for his old bands' material, bemoaning the death of the record shop, and refusing to buy an iPhone.
>> Favorite New Songs from the Past Year
I like "Black Girl" by the Gasoline Angels. I like Britney Spears' new song...although, I haven't heard it...but I lip-synch to it all the time [laughs].
>> Favorite Older Songs at the Moment
I've been listening to my own family of music lately. Like, Eagles of Death Metal, and I listen to the Queens' record and the Masters of Reality and Earthlings.
Pitchfork: Yeah? How's it holding up?
Fuckin' good, man. Better than your music, that's for sure. Oh wait, you guys don't make music, you just write about it [laughs].
>> Favorite New Band
I kind of like this Black Angels record-- it's really good. They're from Texas and that makes me happy, because I want something good to finally come out of Texas. We're going to do some shows with them.
>> Favorite Song Ever
Yeah, my favorite song of all time is "Sleepwalk" by Santo & Johnny. It sounds like heaven. And it's instrumental, so you get to add your own lyrics to it.
>> Best Recent Concert
I haven't seen many shows lately because I've been on tour. I would say LCD Soundsystem at Austin City Limits.
>> Last Great Film I Saw
Yeah, I just saw 3:10 to Yuma. It was awesome. You need a little suspension of disbelief at the very end, but it was good, I like it. Those two guys, Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, are awesome.
>> Last Great Book I Read
Yeah, actually, Margarita and the Madman was good... and How to Spot a Liar. It's a book on how to read people if they're lying; it's non-fiction, written by a U.S. Navy Seal interrogator. It's very fascinating.
Pitchfork: You feel like you've got a lot of people lying to you?
No, but now I feel like I can lie to anyone and they won't know [laughs].
>> Favorite Piece of Musical Equipment
I don't have a preference. It don't matter what it is.
>> Favorite Record Shop
They still have those? [laughs] I'm gonna miss those fuckin' things. I used to like to just hang out there. I guess you can have a coffee store and a bookshop now...Amoeba, definitely.
Pitchfork: Did you get anything good there recently?
Yeah, I was able to get some Groundhogs records there.
>> Best Purchase of the Past Year
Shit, I don't know. I guess the best thing I didn't buy is an iPhone. My mother's got one, but I don't want my computer to be in my phone, too. What if it gets a virus or some shit? It's cool, I don't need an iPhone, I'm good. It's sort of like neon lights underneath your car: until everyone has to, I'm not doing it.
>> Best Thing I Did This Year
Going on the Duluth Tour is the best thing I've done. Playing the towns that don't ever get [good concerts]. It was fuckin' awesome...sure made Houston look like a bunch of dorks.
>> Favorite Music Venue
That's really hard to say. Every once in awhile, after you've been on tour for awhile, the House of Blues will really make you happy because they treat you good, there's good sours, a good sound system, a good stage. We played this place called Ram's Head in Baltimore-- they treated us really good and it was really cool. There's a lot of good venues out there now.
>> Favorite TV Show at the Moment
I always love "Survivor" the most. Because everyone tries to be cool but then they get hungry and then they can't act anymore. They're just broken down to their animal self. I've gone back and seen them all. "Survivor"'s bad ass.
>> Favorite Video Game at the Moment
No, I don't play video games all the time...
>> Favorite Radio Show
They still have radio? [laughs] I don't have a favorite radio show. The only thing I really listen to radio-wise is Jonesy's Jukebox. It's Steve Jones, his radio show on Indie [103.1 FM] in LA. He actually plays whatever he wants-- it's really weird. I've never heard of such a madman.
