Numero Group Unearths Miami Soul Label Deep City

Known for unearthing everything from Belizean funk to hillbilly gospel, the Chicago reissue label the Numero Group works hard to dig into the crevices of the record geek's mind. On January 31, it will release the third offering in its Eccentric Soul series, focusing on the output of the Miami label Deep City. During its brief existence from 1964 to 1968, Deep City laid down the foundation for disco, launching the careers of Betty Wright, Paul Kelly, Clarence "Blowfly" Reid, and producer Willie Clarke. Clarke, who ran Deep City with Johnny Pearsall, would go on to work for TK Records, home of KC and the Sunshine Band, Anita Ward, George McRae, and other disco staples.

Eccentric Soul: The Deep City Label features early recordings from Wright and Kelly, as well as tracks by obscure artists only known to the most devoted collectors, such as the Moovers, Them Two, Johnny K Killens, Frank Williams, and Helene Smith.

01 Them Two - "Am I a Good Man"
