Byrds Box Takes Flight
It's got 99 tracks and ain't one a bitch
Seems the staff over at Columbia/Legacy Recordings has caught the Byrd flu. But don't fret-- that creative/archaic spelling can only mean it's the good kind. The label will bring legendary folk rockers the Byrds back into the picture this month (have they ever really left?) with a four-CD/one-DVD collection titled There Is a Season. The set, compiled with the help of band members Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman, alights on record store shelves on September 26.The box holds a whopping 99 chronologically-arranged audio tracks, the first half or so of which feature the Byrds' original lineup-- and a couple from when they called themselves, no joke, the Beefeaters. The set also nests five previously unreleased live tracks: "He Was a Friend of Mine" (taped in April 1967 for Swedish radio), "You All Look Alike" and "Nashville West" (both from a February 28, 1970 show at New York's Queens College), and "I Trust" and a cover of Jimmy Reed's "Baby What You Want Me To Do" (both from a September 23, 1970 show at New York's Fillmore East).
The DVD, meanwhile, features 10 tracks of rare television performances from 1965-1967. There Is a Season's liner notes, penned by Rolling Stone's David Fricke, include contributions from Tom Petty and the Jayhawks' Gary Louris, as well as an introduction by McGuinn himself.
