Bjork, Sigur Ros Team for Environmental Awareness Gig

Bjork cancels Israel show, plays Greece instead
Bjork, Sigur Ros Team for Environmental Awareness Gig In an effort to get folks thinking about environmental issues in their shared homeland of Iceland-- oh, and to raise the swoon quotient on earth by like 40% for a couple hours-- Björk, Sigur Rós and Múm collaborator Ólöf Arnalds will join forces for a concert in Reykjavik on June 28. The big gig will take place at an as-yet-undisclosed location in the Icelandic capital. In a statement posted on her website, Björk had this to say about the show and its intent:

Neither me or Sigur Rós look at ourselves as experts on nature, or as politicians, but we do travel a lot and we believe we know a lot about what image Iceland has abroad, and that we are far behind when it comes to being... I spent for example two months in South America and there you saw the poor doing recycling. We can't be 30 years behind, we need to work together on this and preferably we should be leading the way.

Too often battles being fought for nature turn into something negative and into mudslinging. We will not go that way, we are not saying that this and that is forbidden, we are rather asking "what about all these other possibilities?" The 21st century is not going to be another oil century but rather a century where we need to recycle, think green and design both power plants and our surroundings in harmony with nature.

Geez, hop on the Radiohead tour, why don't you?

The gig in Reykjavik is the next stop on Björk's fest-heavy summer tour itinerary, which finds her all over Europe throughout the next several months. You'll get a crack at Sigur Ros' crazy asses on quite a few occasions in the meantime, not to mention on their forthcoming Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust LP, due June 23 via EMI and in North America June 24 via XL.

Also note that a Björk date, planned for Tel Aviv, Israel on July 31, has been moved... all the way to Athens, Greece. Though some-- like Israel's own Ynetnews-- have speculated that the cancellation of the Israeli date was due to poor ticket sales, Björk's publicist denies that claim, adding that "this new routing just worked out better for numerous reasons." Especially if you live in Athens, Greece.
