Flaming Lips Lend New Song to Okie Noodling Sequel
Okie Noodling is a stupendously entertaining 2001 documentary about a group of rural Oklahoman practitioners of "noodling": that is, fishing using only one's hands. As you might imagine, the folks who do the hand fishing are kind of a unique bunch. The film, directed by Bradley Beesley (who also co-directed Summercamp!), featured a soundtrack boasting a few tunes from another singular set of Sooners: the Flaming Lips.
Well, Beesley's now crafted Okie Noodling II, which follows up on the original noodlers and introduces a new flock of fin-grabbers. And, once again, the Lips have given their old buddy Beesley's film some tuneage. They contribute a brand new track called "Cosmic Trigger 2", a nod to "The Southern Oklahoma Cosmic Trigger Contest", their jam for the original film's soundtrack.
As for the rest of the music in Noodling II? It was handled by Jason Quever of Papercuts, with Starlight Mints also contributing a track. The film won't hit DVD until July 14 (via MavTV), but it's screening quite a bit over the next week if you're curious to hear what the Lips have been up to. You can check out Okie Noodling II at Columbia, Missouri's Ragtime Theater from today (July 1) through July 4, or at Austin, Texas' Alamo Drafthouse on July 7.
In other Lips news, they've been doing a few shows here and there lately, with a whole lot more to follow over the next couple months. They'll also make a little pitstop at the VH1 Who tribute thing I keep seeing commercials for, which airs July 17.
