Thriller
Considering their penchant for bombast, the restraint Aereogramme show in their cover of "Thriller" is both a little surprising and a bit of a letdown. With a combination of haunting strings, otherworldly samples, and a pretty straightforward vocal reading, they turn the pop sensibility of the source material into a funeral dirge, a horror film soundtrack far more appropriate to the famous video than the cartoony pop song that originally accompanied it. Aereogramme's true strength here lies in their ability to turn blasts of pure noise into something both catchy and compelling, despite their occasional hit-or-miss forays into the ether. However, in choosing such a muted approach to "Thriller", they miss an opportunity you'd think was unmissable for a band like this-- namely, remaking the King of Pop into a bellowing beast. "
