“Dantanna”

[2004]
At a slight two minutes and ten seconds, you'd hardly expect "Dantanna" to have much impact, but, like the catchiest songs from Idaho's second era, it's a highly addictive sedative. Dating from the band's 1998 rebirth after the dissolution of a five-year marriage to Caroline Records, "Dantanna" crystallizes the dazed longing Jeff Martin's been known for since the early 1990s. Built around a sliding bassline and Martin's signature clean guitar, the song puts to bed the pressures of two failed relationships; lyrically, it's very personal, but its sonic simplicity serves as a stark rejoinder to the comparatively overdone label-years finale Three Sheets to the Wind.
