The Unicorns
“Sea Ghost”

[2003]
A lone piccolo sets the phantasmagorically forestal mood. Surely, there must be Unicorns here. Oh, there they are: not a horn in sight, but instead magically delicious a (and we'll also say "sample-ready") kickdrum/snare combo laced with sloppy pop barre chords and a lead guitar that thunderously crackles with AC current. Hey, is that It Was Hot-era Microphones simmering in their crummily, beautifully amateurish four-track splendor? No wait, 'cause it has their fiendish disregard for the time-honored legacy of the verse/chorus/verse structure, but there's that vintage Rivers Cuomo infusion in the vocals and the crappy guitars. You can almost hear the horn-rims, or Fonz kicking up his bootheels in a freaky Russian jump-dance. And then that guy's singing about trying to peel a flesh-eating parasite off him? Maybe it's a metaphor for this track's awesome hook. 2003 rules.
