I Used to Dance With My Daddy

The first time I heard this song, those first ten seconds or so killed me. This could be amazing, I remember thinking, and every four measures I worried these guys would ruin a potentially good thing with thin Casio shit or something clever like funk guitar. Instead Datarock just fucking go for it-- do you hear that bassline? Two football fields wide-- so massive, so lumbering, maybe even a little bit stupid. Elsewhere, Datarock have a case of the Madchesters-- these Norwegians clearly picked up English from Happy Mondays records-- but they meet that influence at least halfway, the production dense to near-Basement Jaxx degrees, warm and compact enough though that the song never overwhelms. I hear if you play it backwards, Annie appears in your room holding a stack of Vice.
