CocoRosie
“Beautiful Boyz”

[2005]
Whenever my favorite J Mascis kewpie does a duet, his other-godly vibrato reduces even the most golden-throated partners to beholden backups. Here, Antony steals the spotlight from Sierra and Bianca Casady, aka Cocorosie. For their tale of a 10-year-old orphan boy caught stealing from a nun, the witchy sisters play like a strangulated Newsom and aerated Cat Power, their voices accompanied by muffled electronic percussion and mournful piano. One-upping Les Mis, the boy scores thirty years in prison and eventual, undisputed love with a death-row inmate. The Casadys gurgle plot-line incantations, but Antony nails the panoply of Genet's grubby, romantic criminal landscape with his somber parade of pimps, queens, and waterlogged tattoos.
