Posh Isolation
For those eagerly awaiting more material from Menomena, the band has released two leftover tracks from the I am The Fun Blame Monster sessions. We'd be better off waiting still: "Posh Isolation" is a meandering instrumental, more ambient chill-out than quirky rock, getting along on a thin three-note guitar line and a few ghostly wails. The stilted bassline and dull mechanical beat sound like a band's first practice together, sheepish and reserved, no chemistry.
At least "Tung Track" is more upbeat: It's grounded by quick electric cymbals, a vaguely Eastern guitar melody, and a "Cannonball"-simple bassline while singer Brent Knopf gets his Camille on. Some details don't quite gel, like the cascading piano notes toward the end, but when the band drops out and the drums get deeper and slower, you can hear them grasp the tension that served them so well before.
