This Is the Night

I haven't actually read the Harry Potter books, so I'm going to guess the following: Several Christian groups have accused J.K. Rowling's stories of promoting witchcraft, and since witches are traditionally considered poor, class warrior Jarvis Cocker and the politically conscious Jonny Greenwood were summoned for this kooky popcorn track. I would've imagined Harry's iPod spinning Warlocks or the Magic Numbers, not Pulp and Radiohead, but those two bands' respective pomp and other-worldliness combine for a track surprisingly apropos of our young wizard and his newfound hormones (hey, I can read plot synopses).

Cocker gasps ambiguous lines like "Your hands are sinking, baby/ You ain't been sleepin' lately" and "Your voice keeps haunting me/ I cannot eat or sleep...You put a spell on me!" while Greenwood's bubbling, aqueous riffs keep things sorcerous. Sure, Greenwood and Cocker may bait uptight indie purists with this kitsch, but I'd worry more about, say, the Southern Baptist Convention banning the song for depicting "wizard sex."
