Canada vs. America
Didn't Michael Moore already pull this off 10 years ago with Canadian Bacon? Not the over-the-top smear of lo-fi grandiosity of course, but the whole U.S./Canada conflict-- kinda hackneyed, eh? The chorus ("The big guns are comin' out!") is basically a sangfroid, self-conscious indie response to, say, South Park's "Blame Canada!", but fortunately BSS always bring the hooks; with their newfangled muddy production these lyrics often can't be distinguished from a trumpet. In six minutes the band throws numerous indie touchstones into a blender and flicks the "slow" switch, and for better or worse these guys are the best at exploiting nostalgia for the golden age of Built to Spill, Pavement, etc. Still, this soup's probably got too many chefs behind it, and I'm beginning to wonder if all BSS's new stuff is just ten classic indie albums played together at once.
