Hand on Your Heart
In the original, Kylie confronted a lover with an ultimatum, and the
resolution was left completely up in the air-- happiness or heartbreak. In
this cover, José González just sounds really, really earnest; he presumes
heartache on the first note. To his credit Gonzalez isn't merely slowing
down a fast song. He really seems to buy into the anguish of the lyrics,
translating those stodgy '89 beats to his guitar with surprising syncopated
fluidity. And the odd effects halfway through, which might be screeching
birds in an aviary, only up the eerie intimacy. Still, the cover sounds like
it's missing something essential in the original; I think it might be Kylie."
