“When You Wasn't Famous (Professor Green Remix)”

[2006]
Taking the piss out of his boss' recent bitchy reality check, this 22-year-old wise-ass pulls off a rare genuinely funny sneak move that recalls early Eminem sans vitriolic hate. Green, who was recently signed to Mike Skinner's the Beats label, fits well perfect as Lady Sov's straight-brimmed male counterpart, jabbering with ear gnawing cheekiness. "I'm sure everyone wanted to know about how easy it is for you to get girls," he deadpans, reacting to Skinner's original "it's so easy" hook. Cracking self-deprecation over the tinkle-time "Famous" melody, Green seems anything but as he breaks down label politics and the push-pull of tabloid stardom with an endearing wink.

Like Em, this crooked-toothed MC was raised on quick-thinking battles and he bundles knowing punchlines with an in-the-pocket rhyme style-- an antidote to Skinner's spoken-word anti-flow. And, thankfully, he considers his potential fame with a cocked brow: "Dat Mike right, it's his label I'm signed to/ I think it was the right move/ But, basically, what that means is that he makes more money off of my records than I do." Add a little extra when considering the song's video, which finds Green in bulky antennae headphones, munching words with the expressive charm of Wallace while Skinner goes Gromit as a silent scalpel-wielding svengali.
