Bossy

I love seeing artists succeed without the aid of their superstar producers; it's like seeing a dog walk on its hind legs, and in recent years Kelis has made the transition from Neptunes ingenue to boho high priestess, blessing beats by everyone from Dallas Austin to Raphael Saadiq. "Bossy", her Bangladesh-produced new single, finds Nasir's better half displaying her quirky clotheshorse steez atop Middle-Eastern G-funk, as envisioned by the makers of "Adult Swim". Boosted by a deep-fried 808 and sinister synths, the Harlem-bred songstress offers for a bit of quasi-feminist sloganeering, which is offset by the cartoonishly tricked-out track. But instead of distracting, the song's noisy otherness-- like the garbage truck or a faked orgasm-- serves a distinct purpose: You dance to it, stupid. It'll cure even nervously aging hipsters of their "Hey Ya" hangovers.
