Paddy's Gone
As we learned from "Hope There's Someone", Antony's music gains power as it gets sparser. With a band, he sounds great; alone, he sounds not-of-this-world, transmitting signals like bottled messages from the depths of his vast and beautiful dread. This elegiac ballad is as close as he's come to recreating the hushed majesty of that flagship single: lambent piano and a multi-tracked swarm of Antonys, honeyed syllables stitched with his alien vibrato contorting in a starry void. But we also know that sparse doesn't mean small vis-à-vis the most arresting crooner of this millennium, and "Paddy's Gone", despite the meagerness of its components, quietly fills up the room, cascading down the walls in glittering, hot-then-cold fever frissons."
