Mr. Lif
“Washitup!”

[2006]
Pum pum is sexy; clean pum pum is sexier. Mr. Lif is nice and furious on political metaphor, but he's no sensual Sean Paul and he knows it. So on this charming dancehall number, he goofs on seduction: Instead of encouraging us to wine on him, he literalizes Dutty Rock, begging ladies to clean up that lovestink before he goes downtown, lest his "slide whistle" run into a "glissando," if you know what I'm saying. Winking in patois, he begs, "A little water and soap/ And come along smellin' fresh, that'd be dope...I'm just talkin' that rill/ Don't wanta uh if da uh smell stale." Lif then cites examples and provides solutions-- even his sex jams are edifying! It'd be all jokes and public service announcements if his beats didn't belie a freaked-out paranoiac. As producer, Lif drops an infectiously rigid rhythm and samples a trill from a 1960s sci-fi score, perhaps, to remind us that a waft from down there might imply bigger problems than personal hygiene.
