Gorilla [ft. Fabo of D4L]

No stone unturned in the obvious metaphor graveyard for Robert. Monkey noises and snap shit make another vessel for the dude to do his woozy, by-now breathlessly self-referential thing-- but is it ever fun to listen to! Never a thought to racial or cultural degradation for Kelly. To conflate animal urges with broadly stroked images of animalism would require too much thought. "It's like you ice cream, girl/ And I wanna get a scoop"-- naturally a club confection, parsing would only blur matters. The word "club" actually gets mentioned at least seven times.

Fabo, to his credit, fits "laffy taffy" into his verse, which is a strict exercise in melody. A fact basically no one has mentioned? D4L's album was ripe with melody. Stretching one's voice around a beat is not something to scoff at, though you'd never know from the endless potshots those martyrs absorb. With Timbaland back in the game and a Kelis album on the horizon, weak sauce r&b imagery gets less of a pass these days.
