Bull in the Heather
I'd love to see the dartboard the Go! Team chucked at before deciding on
this utterly random and confusing cover. Perhaps the Team's aiming to
cultivate a more aesthete-over-athlete image by covering a song from
one of Sonic Youth's most disregarded albums, though this combined with the
Kevin Shields remix gives the squad an 0-2 record when dabbling with
indie monoliths. Ousting Kim Gordon's bohemian gasps with cheerleader
cadences feels like high school Darwinism at its worst. On the flip
side, they treat the instrumentation like a sacred cow, barely touching
it save for the added handclaps and faux-Prodigy beats. It could be
worse: they could've crammed another "Tighten Up" sample in there or
really accentuated those Bring It On claps, but ultimately the Team's signature 1970s sheen yields too much to its noise rock sample.
