The Drunkk Machine
One
of the first B-sides from Yorke's Eraser project opts for oblique sound collage
over tangible song form, which means more forbidding spoken word ("The drunkk
machine/ Spitting nonsense/ Spitting feathers/ Talking in tongues/ Swiveling
heads/ Splittin' hairs") mumbled over a mostly tuneless mess of glitch
particles, discordant bell tones, and digital shrapnel. Its defining feature is
Yorke's from-the-belly feline scream, which transitions its last act into a
messy outro of scattershot rhythms and pinprick guitars. Yorke's on record as
saying he chose not to give this headliner status because "it would have been
like putting a massive stink bomb in the middle of the record"; while "The
Drunkk Machine" is hardly as agitating as that quote makes it seem (although, come
to think of it, dude's probably got a couple of really amazing noise records in
him) his instincts on this one were pretty much on the money. A nice enough B-side, but probably not enough to inspire Eraser-haters to tracklist tweak in
the name of a better full-length.
