Battle of Zora
This skeletal track from the mysterious I Love My MPC 2000 but I've Chosen Prog Metal is the alleged result of trying to merge the dark, off-kilter elegance of art-heshers like Isis and Boris with hip hop's technology and crisp boom-bap, but dude (or dudette) might as well have just listened to a lot of Excepter. On "Battle of Zora", a series of imbricate yet distinct loops-- clustery fillips of bass and rubbery contrapuntal synths, staccato volleys of drums, and a phased and flickering voice-- gradually slither toward a trunk-rattling outro, but only after establishing an aura of complex shadow and disconcerting, wind-whistled open space. Rather than simply welding screaming guitars onto splashy drums, ILMMPC2000BICPM takes a more gestural and loosely interpretative approach, rendering the putative prog-metal-hop (which is closer to the ol' IDM than anything) with Butoh-like evocation.
