C'mon
Philadelphia-based
A Sunny Day in Glasgow is King Kong Ding Dong's
Ben Daniels and his two sisters, Robin and Lauren. For a shoegazer, Brother Daniels sure likes looking at
the sky: band name, EP title, and another track ("The Best Summer
Ever") all reference sunshine or the seasons. While that track is fuzzed-out carpark power pop, "C'mon"
steals its reverb and makes that the song: gnarled guitar
strings bend out of place while the Daniels sisters chant in rounds, "Be
afraid of ghosts are, really." They sing the odd line in
pretty little arpeggios, their sugary voices dipping in and out of
the strings-- nevermind that they're the ghosts they warned us
about, soon erupting into a haunted chorus of "ah-ah-ah-ah." Close to the end of "C'mon", their warning turns into
command, and the song's layers get too thick and impenetrable. Like
Grizzly Bear, ASDIG's got a steep pop-to-noise curve, so their most
gorgeous melodies become thick and swampy before you've noticed the
tide has come in. Even the brightest colors look black if you smear
them all together.
