Cat Power“Who Knows Where The Time Goes”
[2006]

Next to Fairport Convention, who had their own version of this track, Chan
Marshall sounds less like she's recasting the original in her image and
more like she just doesn't know the song. She eschews Denny's wistful
and content ruminations on the order of things, instead focusing on the
line about fickle friends and turning the song's titular question into
a portentous moan. Thankfully, Marshall's piano counteracts this
slanted lyrical revision. The sound of the piano notes fading into
silence carries more weight than any of Marshall's over-emotive whispers. Maybe Chan knows this
song after all.
