Cobrastyle

Robyn's back with a new EP, further distancing herself from her long lost proto-Britney teenpop roots (her indie music is better anyway), and "Cobrastyle" is one of its modest triumphs. This version isn't a cover of the Teddybears Sthlm song so much as a total overhaul, an impressionistic abstraction. Only vaguely familiar traces remain in the song's simple synth loop and amorphous gut rumblings for a bassline. Robyn hints at Mad Cobra's delivery with a slight dancehall inflection, but makes it prettier-- everything is prettier, but the arrangement basically serves as an unobtrusive backdrop for Robyn's sweet interpretation. It's also a demonstration of her range, since a few songs later she's belting out Prince's "Jack U Off" like a brat at the back of the bus.
