I Know

Ego is no object to Sally Shapiro, our childlike empress of the disco whose shyness still precludes her from singing in the presence of anyone-- even her own producer, Johan Agebjörn, who's said he vacates the room and mows the lawn while she records. Given the pair's immaculate track record-- Euro-envisioning Italo revival gem "I'll Be By Your Side", frosty B-side "Time to Let Go", and Nixon cover "Anorak Christmas" all sparkle and soar with angelic grace-- the cynics among us might be cawing fall. And for the first few seconds of Disco Romance's "I Know", you worry they're right-- man, do those opening keyboard bars redefine schmaltz.

But it's all a ploy, and before you know it Sally's whisked you away from the lounge of the damned to her own private, cloud-forged disco wonderland, heart set on realizing escapist fantasies for all. Hand in nervous hand, she coos between flashes of heavenly light, "I know you're my love/ Even though/ Sometimes I/ Believe/ I will wake up/ From this dream," suspending each closing syllable in the synth-spun ether. Elsewhere, her shaded versework traces the shadows on the dark side of the disco ball, while Agebjörn's shimmery synths sync up with all the bright spots, everything in constant, pulsating, revolving motion. All you need worry about waking from, my friend, is this six minute disco dream come true.
