New Music: Friend [ft. Air France]: "Secret (Demo)" [MP3]

As with a lot of stuff linked to Sweden's Sincerely Yours label, it's hard to figure out how exactly to list the artist or title for this funky, string-swept collage. Technically, of course, the artist is UK-based Friend, aka Jesse Kanda, and it's called "Secret (Demo)". Essentially, though, it's a remix of Sincerely Yours duo Air France's idyllic "Collapsing at Your Doorstep", from the Best New Music-worthy No Way Down EP. If you've noticed that the label gives its videos different titles than its songs, or that it often credits remixes as new songs by the remixers (for example, Swedish elecro-pop group the Embassy's "Some Indulgence" became the Tough Alliance's "Now That's What I Call Indulgence"), then you've probably realized the standard nomenclature is bullshit. Call it what you want. But with those snippets of kids' voices, dropped into horn samples and propulsive bass suggesting a late-1970s disco rather than a tropical getaway, definitely call it a fun reworking of one of the year's best tracks. And no, we're not not done mixing yet, thanks.
