Stream: Booji Boy High (Hot Chip): "Doubleshaw"/ "Twist Myself Again" [MySpace]
Little is known of Booji Boy High, and with a bandname like that, you couldn't be blamed for thinking it should probably stay that way. But there's speculation afoot, and we've all but confirmed it's some kind of insane side project by a couple dudes from the excellent Hot Chip. So far, there's only one 7" out-- not coincidentally released by the DFA-- but it's enough to leave us craving more.
Okay, truth: The A-side, "Doubleshaw", is more intriguing than, you know, good. But it is off on its own thing entirely, zippering up dirty synths with horn stabs, and locking together a kickdrum with congos, drum machines, and rubberband springs-- a different beat for each verse and chorus. Detailing those hours after you've stopped dancing, but aren't yet ready to leave the bar, the chorus laments their friend's unwillingness to call it a night, repeating his name until it's twisted and modulated into a teenage boy's pubescent yowl.
But it's the B-side, "Twist Myself Again", that's got us curious. "I'm like a hulk inside the body of a fish," sings Alexis Taylor, Hot Chip's diminutive singer, who looks as fragile as he sounds. The track stays reserved-- slow-paced, and mild-mannered-- until keyboard scales take over the chorus and careen out of control. Who knows why Hot Chip are hiding behind a fake name for this 7"? Maybe they didn't want to look greedy.
